Bean and Basil Spread

Serves: 4

Try using this as a sandwich spread. You might add alfalfa sprouts or a slice of tomato.


   _ cup canned garbanzo beans, rinsed and drained
   ___ cup fat-free or reduced-fat creamy Italian dressing
   ___ cup fresh basil leaves or 2 teaspoons dried basil leaves
   ___ teaspoon garlic powder
   Salt, if desired
   Pita bread wedges, if desired


Place beans, dressing, basil and garlic powder in blender or food processor. Cover and blend on medium-high speed about 1 minute, stopping blender occasionally to scrape sides, until smooth. Add salt to taste. Serve with pita bread wedges.
