In 1968, I was named Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow at Nordonia High School. I married my high school sweetheart and worked until my first child was born in 1980. In this family is my husband of twenty-six years, a daughter, a son who is profoundly hearing impaired, and a foster son, who has been with us for over three years. We have been foster parents for eleven years to five children (but only one foster child at a time!).
Besides managing this household, I am a dedicated child advocate. I spend a great deal of time at my children's schools and of a great deal of effort raising money for the Hearing Aid Fund. Over the years, I have spent much time volunteering at church. When it was called for, I taught Sunday School because no one else could begin to teach or understand my son. Today, I am proud to say, that is not the case. He is a wonderfully outgoing, popular boy who speaks quite well.
My love of cooking and entertaining has stood me well! Now I have the pleasure of teaching my sons to cook; my daughter is already quite capable of taking care of herself when she leaves home. I love to cook and no matter what age the children were, I always assumed they would like what I liked. I probably have the only three children in the world who bet for broccoli cheese soup and seafood à la Newburg for dinner! I am proud to be a mother, foster mother, and homemaker. I make the distinction between mother and foster mother only because to be a foster mother, it takes continuous training, a knowledge of psychology, and a willingness to work with the County Department of Children's and Family Resources and the court system.
