My best friend and wife, Jo Ann Gautier Vincent, is currently a reading teacher at John Quincy Adams public school. She has taught for fourteen years, but too time out in the middle of her career to be a fulltime mom.
This month, Jo Ann was recognized as the Middle School Teacher of The Year for East Jefferson Parish (County). This award was granted for both work within the classroom and in the community.
While Jo Ann is a reading teacher, she believes in encouraging learning across different subjects. The children are motivated to read and usually do not realize how much they are learning. Teachers in other subjects are often surprised when they find out what their students learned in reading.
Jo Ann's spirit of compassion, service, and action did not begin with teaching. When Jo Ann was thirteen years old, here mother became very ill. Responsibilities for operating the home fell on her. She cared from her mother, father, and younger brother. A kind neighbor gave Jo Ann a "Betty Crocker New Picture Cook Book" for Christmas in 1961. By reading and experimenting, Jo Ann learned how to cook. Her favorite Betty Crocker products are the various cake mixes. There are two in the cupboard now, and we hope that we will find a Betty Crocker cake on the table any day.
All of us are amazed at how she keeps such a full schedule and manages to provide such good meals, too. I not only love her (and her cooking), but am proud of her independent spirit and career achievements as well.
