My sister, Samantha, is the Betty Crocker of the 1990s, an example of a young person who is focused, generous, and dedicated. "Sam," as she prefers to be called, is a twenty-year-old honors student at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. She has, for as long as anyone can remember, dreamed of performing on Broadway. It became obvious to everyone who heard her perform at the age of five in the St. Mary's Church Children's Choir that she was destined to fill the world with beautiful music.
Her friends call her "Mom" from her homemaking projects. Sam is the best cook and baker any dormitory has ever seen. She has a dog-eared Betty Crocker Cookbook that she uses to delight her roommates and friends. She is known for Old-Fashioned Oatmeal Cookies.
Yet the real Sam that everyone cherishes is the person who is committed to those around her. Every Saturday morning, Sam assists New Yorkers in adopting homeless and abused dogs. She has been involved in environmental efforts, projects for AIDS victims, and performances at nursing homes. Recently, Sam became a volunteer for the "Mighty Mutts" program.
Sam is the ideal daughter, sister, and friend. She has an infectious smile that is sure to help brighten everyone's day. It is a pleasure to have Sam part of anything-just ask anyone who has enjoyed her meals, watched her perform, or helped her with her latest volunteer project.
