My sweet wife, Marie McKell, is primarily a homemaker and as such has made our home a place of love and warmth, a place where the kitchen is the hub of activity. Most often we are drawn there as we arrive home by the smell of freshly baked homemade bread. Marie has taught our children the joy of cooking. Our oldest son, now thirty, bakes a marvelous cheesecake. And now our two youngest love to try out any new, as well as the old favorite, cookie recipes.
In Marie's library of cookbooks are four well-worn Betty Crocker editions: a 1961 first edition of the "New Picture Cook Book," a 1967 "Betty Crocker Hostess Cook Book," a 1979 edition (11th printing) of the "Betty Crocker Cook Book," and the 1989 (6th printing) of the "New and Revised Betty Crocker Cook Book." Without a doubt, Marie's favorite Betty Crocker recipes are from the sections on quick breads, pies, and cinnamon rolls. How worn the pages are attest to this. It's Betty Crocker she trusts.
Marie has for many years been a devoted friend and frequent visitor to a shut-in, a lady ninety-three years of age, whose closest relatives live in Germany and who has been confined to a convalescent hospital near us.
Outside of family, school, church, and friends, Marie has also extended her influence into the community in her part-time work. She works for the local daily newspaper as an advisor who trains and supervises twenty-four young paper carriers. Her patience and caring help them to model attitudes and behavior that encourages them as they learn responsibility.
