Dolores Vaccaro has been a loyal 4-H foods leader for eighteen years and has provided leadership and support to hundreds of youth. Dolores is loved and respected by all. She has been the main cook at 4-H camp for many years, and through donations from the community, she has saved enough to send many other 4-H leaders to various activities and trips. While her children attended a Catholic school, Dolores raised enough money to add on an additional classroom. Dolores also organized a very large project at our local nature center to build a trail for handicapped access to the river. Her home is full of homemade crafts. She formed a club to help some of her friends, who have been widowed, earn extra money. Dolores sponsors a craft show once a year to sell all the craft items they have made. Dolores is also very dedicated to her family. Dolores was raised by a single mom, after the death of her father. Dolores is the mother of three successful, grown children and is the grandmother of two. Dolores believes in strong family ties and cooks a family meal every Sunday that all of her family attends. You are never a stranger in her home, and she and her husband of forty-nine years always have their home open to all! Dolores has been winning at state and county fairs since 1951 and has over three hundred ribbons as proof. Dolores literally tests hundreds of recipes a year in her kitchen. She is up every morning by 5:00 A.M., making fresh bread and other baked items. When our city was on the verge of loosing the Colorado State Fair, Dolores went into action. She organized a "Save the Fair" campaign that reached many people; among them, Willie Nelson who did a benefit to help save the fair; Dolores presented Mr. Nelson with a large thank- you card signed by thousands. All work and materials were donated, and Dolores cooked for approximately fifteen hundred that weekend. The community all pulled together, and with people like Dolores, Pueblo is still proud to be the home of the Colorado State Fair. She exemplifies the traditional homemaker and, at the same time, is in tune with the present-day working woman. She is truly remarkable. From "Betty Crocker's Best-Loved Recipes."
