I grew up in a large family, and my mother insisted that everyone (guys included) must learn to cook. One night a week each of us had to plan a well-balanced meal, cook, and then clean up afterward. Now, my sisters and I are excellent cooks, and my brothers tend to do most of the cooking in their homes, too. I am well known among friends and family for my culinary skills, and baking is one of my favorite hobbies. I have always used and enjoyed Betty Crocker products. I especially enjoy the cake mixes both because of health consciousness and because of their versatility, particularly with my busy lifestyle. My story is a bit different from most. Less than a dozen years ago, I was a single mother on welfare, and although I was at the bottom, I was not content to stay there. I started college in 1988 and received a BS in Biology (magna cum laude) in 1995. After graduation I was accepted as a doctoral candidate in the Cell and Molecular Biology graduate program at Penn State. I am currently doing cancer research for my doctoral thesis. I am recently married with a pre-teen son named Alex. I have always had a strong sense of community involvement, and particularly due to my past dependence on the welfare system, I felt it was important to give back to the community. I've raised money for a senior citizen's center, registered people to vote, and participated in fund-raising for the American Lung Association and the American Cancer Association among others. But my two pet projects were the Berks County Commission for Women (BCCFW) and Berks AIDS Network (BAN). During the time in which I served, we accomplished a lot, including conducting and publishing a local mammography services survey, doing an intensive study of the problem of domestic abuse in Berks County, and working with the local Domestic Relations Office to help make their system more user-friendly. I've come a long way, and I owe a lot to those who believed in me and gave me the support I needed through the long and difficult years that it took for me to achieve my dream.
