Mrs. Douglas's love for cooking was discovered when she was a very young girl, as she grew up on a ranch in the Sandhills of Nebraska. Harvesting, haying, and doing chores often found the rest of her family outdoors. Her mother trusted her to make the meals for the hungry brood, and everyone soon realized the talent that was there. She picked up a degree in home economics from the University of Nebraska and followed her new husband into the military. She promptly began teaching bread and pastry classes out of her home and entertained people with her baked delights. She has participated in baking contests (winning several prizes)and began a bread-baking business that has hungry customers waiting each week for "bread day."
Those who know Penny know of her commitment to family and friends. Probably Penny's greatest commitment was shown just a few years ago to a dear neighbor dying of cancer. Penny baked her goods on a weekly basis not only to provide an opportunity to visit and cheer her but also to meet her needs for fighting the disease itself.
She has trained her family to be a great team that supports many areas of home management. In a day of waning commitment on the part of schools to the field of home economics, she has vowed that each of her offspring will have a good background and love for the "kitchen."
Mrs. Douglas is an active member of her local church and a ten-year leader in a local 4-H club. She is also an active member of the American Sewing Guild; the latest project was making clothes for children born prematurely at the local hospital. In her church she is the group leader for a number of wives who meet bimonthly to enjoy each other's company and to improve their marriages. By her actions Mrs. Douglas has blessed her family, and we have enjoyed sharing her with others.
