It seems as if I have always been interested in food preparation. As a result, I chose to major in foods and nutrition. Healthful eating has always been important to me even before it became "fashionable," therefore, I have enjoyed teaching cooking classes and working in consumer service, as well as cooking and baking for my family and friends. Many of my friends call me their "answer lady" on any question relating to food or nutrition, and it has been my pleasure many times to help them. I became involved with one of our local community soup kitchens thirteen years ago. We now serve two hundred meals four times a week. Everyone involved is a volunteer. It has been a very humbling experience to serve the hungry in our city and also very gratifying. Five years ago I was asked by a local not-for-profit to consider working for them. Their clients are pregnant and parenting adolescents. One of their programs is an emergency homeless shelter, and I began my work there as nutritionist. I planned menus and taught cooking and nutrition to the residents. Healthful foods for mom and baby are just about the last thing they want to hear about. I feel, however, that when information is presented in an interesting and casual way, they can and will learn and will have a good time. I visit the moms in their homes to teach independent living skills, too. My favorite part of the job is helping a young mom bake something or prepare a meal for the first time. What a feeling of accomplishment she has! My favorite Betty Crocker product is Hamburger Helper®. As a working mom, it was a great time saver for me and a meal that my family loved. It was also a product that I could adapt to our own tastes. It also helped us out because, at the time, we were on a tight budget and it was an inexpensive dinner for us. I suggest this product to the young moms I work with for the very same reasons. It is a great way to get their feet wet in the kitchen and a good base for planning a dinner menu.
