We have been calling my sister, Susan Senes, Betty Crocker for many years. Our father died when she was eleven years old, and our mother when she was twelve, and she has been cooking ever since. She not only did put loving tender care into her cooking, but became one of the best cooks I know. Whenever we get together, her assignment is desserts, and they look better than their picture. We also look forward to the Salmon Loaf, her favorite recipe from the Betty Crocker cookbook (held together with pieces of cellophane tape).
Susan is a mother of four children and grandmother of Emily. All her children are college graduates, and Susan's husband of thirty-two years is a financial director. Susan is a nursery school teacher at St. Paul's Child Development Center. It is an inner-city day care center in Bridgeport, Connecticut. She is also a eucharist minister at St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Church and helps out at the nursery during masses. Susan could easily teach school anywhere she chooses, since she is a credited teacher and college graduate, but she chose to go into Bridgeport and help the children of all socioeconomic backgrounds. The school is part of the church, and it stays open due to the hard work of Susan and other like her.
So often you hear excuses from people, how sad their childhood was and therefore why bother? Well our family and my sister are proof that it doesn't have to be that way. She has always been a most unselfish person with never an unkind word for anyone.
