Following the diagnosis of an extremely rare form of cancer, my friend Jill Shannon (wife and mother of four) had surgery that left her unable to walk unaided. Another friend and I, hoping to ease Jill's homecoming from the hospital, arranged to take some meals to Jill and her family. Expecting to find Jill resting, we instead found her in the kitchen, leaning on a pair of crutches, making not one but two different kinds of cookies!
A former labor and delivery nurse, Jill interrupted her career to stay at home to commit herself to her family. Jill's commitment to her family includes driving the children to all of the regular "kid activities" as well as to clinic appointments for the two children who have cystic fibrosis.
Jill loves to bake, cook, and share what she creates. She makes her own noodles, pizza dough, baking mix, and vanilla. She cans apples and tomatoes, dries herbs from her garden. Whether taking lunch to the teachers at school, delivering a steaming homemade chicken pot pie to a sick friend, or relinquishing "just one more" cookie to a shy child, Jill's joy in cooking and sharing is evident. She keeps at least thirty days' worth of meals cooked and in the freezer.
An informal record of Jill's community involvement includes Jill visiting a nursing home resident, providing a home for a pregnant teenager, working with international students, acting as a Boy Scout merit badge counselor, teaching Sunday school, and volunteering at her children's school are just a sample. Jill Shannon embodies the Betty Crocker Spirit!
