My mom is seventy-five years old, the same age as Betty Crocker. She married in 1941, baked her first yeast bread from a Betty Crocker recipe, and never bought a loaf of store-bought bread the first year she was married. She has been cooking with Betty Crocker ever since and says Betty Crocker taught her HOW to cook and bake.
She still uses a tiny, dog-eared copy of the Betty Crocker Cook Book of All-Purpose Baking, (1942), and the Betty Crocker Picture Cook Book (1950) was what she used to teach me and my sister our way around the kitchen. I still remember that one of the family traditions she started when we were little was baking the Christ Child's Birthday Cake-a small, star-shaped Betty Crocker cake that was served on Christmas Eve, lighted with candles. She says she learned early on that it is important to find a source of recipes you can trust, so you know the product will "turn out" okay.
My two brothers also came in for their share of instruction from Mother. After they left home, Malcolm surprised her by serving brownies he had baked from a Betty Crocker mix in his college apartment kitchen. Martin says he was brought up with the idea that the name Betty Crocker is synonymous with good food! . . . And now her grandchildren are getting acquainted with Betty Crocker, baking Betty Crocker brownies, biscuits, and having fun with various cake mixes.
D.J. has a background of work with Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, PTA, and especially her church. She is currently on its Finance and Management Board and helps write the church newsletter. She is also well known as a creative solo liturgical dancer, and choreographs original dances, which she performs in worship services in churches across the country. She writes and publishes The Grand Kids Newsletter for her ten grandchildren and their parents, trying to encourage communication between far-flung cousins.
