There is no one more youthful and full of zest for life and spirit than the seventy-three-year-young Marion Kallfelz Rechsteiner, attorney-at-law and president of Delaware Press Women.
While earning a B.A. degree at Syracuse University, Marion lived in a cooperative house, where she often had to cook for twenty women. Two weeks after graduation, Marion replaced a man as editor of a weekly newspaper, where she claims she got her real journalism education, doing every imaginable job but sweeping the floor. In her career as a journalist, Marion proved-in an era when it was uncommon-that a woman could do a man's job as editor of a weekly paper.
A bridal shower gift of the famous Betty Crocker's Picture Cook Book proved invaluable with its basic instructions, especially when she and Leo moved to Wilmington, Delaware, and had three daughters. At Christmas they made good use of Betty Crocker's Cookie Carnival book. Both show signs of great wear and use.
Marion enrolled, at age sixty, in the Antioch School of Law, Washington, D.C., and subsequently in the Widener University School of Law. Marion serves as an attorney for Legal Aid of Chester County, Pennsylvania, helping clients with personal problems such as housing, divorce, custody, and debt collection.
Because of a strong commitment to her community, she is a volunteer for the Hagley Museum and Library; she serves on the board of the Delaware Interfaith Coalition on Aging; she is a member of the advisory committee for a neighborhood group home for people from the state mental hospital; and she continues to serve as a lector at her church. Marion has received numerous honors and awards for cooking and baking and for her commitment to her community and her profession. When asked the secret to leading such a fast-paced and productive life, Marion said, "It's better to wear out than rust out."
