Mom is the entertainer of the neighborhood. She makes kids' birthday cakes, has the men over that dad golfs with, and bakes for my dad's hunt club (his birthday falls in deer season and she sends a sheet cake to the club). She bakes the birthday cakes for four grandchildren, plus sends cupcakes to the classrooms, most times delivering them herself. I noticed a Betty Crocker box in her closet. I asked Mom how it got there? She very happily said "Good cakes every time, half the preparation time, and the closest thing to "homemade cooking." And always a success! I know that this is true.
Mom bakes for Catholic Daughters local chapter (member forty-five years) and snowmobile club (member since 1973). She works as a volunteer for the needy shop for children, for the Sullivan County Cornell Extension Service member, for the Rosary Society, and, I might add, she is always on the baking committees. In handling everyday tasks, I have seen Mom baby-sit for my child-ren, bake for a club, take calls from the local hospital to put a layette together and deliver, and prepare an old-fashioned meal for dad.
My mom, no matter what else she is involved in, never forgets a few moments of one's time and a nice piece of dessert always make a person feel like a million dollars. Because of this attitude, her friends, of whom there are many, joke about the naming of her house as "The Do Drop Inn."
