Gloria Solum
Hector, Minnesota
Three-Bean Casserole ..........Click the Edit tab and select this entry to open the recipe.
She was born and raised in the small town of Bird Island, Minnesota. She grew up in the days of the Depression, when things were homemade rather than bought. With nine children in the house, needless to say, their was a lot of baking to be done. Gloria has always loved to bake and cook her family's favorites.
While her children were growing up, she always made sure that she had time to help them with their home-work and give them baking tips, teach them to knit or crochet, or give them a caring ear to listen or a shoulder to cry on. She also found time to be an active member of their church, Sunday school teacher/superintendent, district P.T.A. vice-president, Woman's Club vice-president, certified L.P.N., plus she was named the 1977 Minnesota Mother of the Year. She is an unbelievable woman.
The most important things to Gloria are her family and friends. She has always said that her family is like a link in the chain of her life and that friendships are a very special blessing. She's always there to help people out, whether it's driving them to a doctor's appointment, lending an ear, or making someone a cake. Even now, she makes sure that every Friday she drives from Hector to Minneapolis to work at the VA Hospital, and when a new grandchild arrives, she makes sure that they have one of her quilts to come home in.
Still, even after her husband had passed on, she never let her community duties slip because she knew that people were counting on her and she would never let anyone down. When I was a child, I would spend at least two weeks with them every summer, and Grandma would make sure that the time I spent there revolved around me. Her favorite recipe is the Betty Crocker Applesauce Cake, which she made for me a lot when I was a child. Even though now that I am a grown woman with children of my own, she still knows how to make me feel special.
