Print this Recipe Cookies are one of the few topics on which adults and children see eye to eye. Adults may lose their taste for certain pleasures of childhood--marshmallows squished between their fingers until they resemble "taffy," sugar right out of the bowl and it's the rare child who appreciates a good rack of lamb or a perfectly seasoned bowl of soup. But young and old think alike on the subject of cookies. Rich cookies, light cookies, wholesome cookies, simple cookies, unusual cookies, even downright decadent cookies have all brought their creators to the Bake-Off® Contest. Recipe histories run the gamut from Old World cookies like the 1957 winner, Accordion Treats, to absolutely American concoctions like Cherry Winks, which are coated with crushed cornflakes, to Old World--New World hybrids like Quick Crescent Baklava. Some Bake-Off® cookies, like Peanut Blossoms and Snappy Turtle Cookies, have gone on to become American classics. They have become classics because they are festive, tasty, fun to make and, of course because they're cookies--which means they're great dessert, snacks, gifts and holiday activities. If enthusiasm is the province of youth, and wisdom the gift of maturity, isn't it nice that the two can meet for cookies? Cookies truly are food for the young and the young at heart.
