Sometimes, despite the most carefully sealed crust, fruit filling bubbles up over the edges or through steam vents in the top crust. As the drips burn, they can smell unpleasant and create a mess in the oven. Prevent this by placing a piece of foil on the lower oven rack to catch the drips.
