Denver, Colorado
In 1987, my mother won the Queen of the Kitchen award for the most ribbons won at the Colorado State Fair. My mom entered sixteen and placed in all sixteen, winning more points (ribbons) than any other contestant in the history of the fair. But that was no surprise to me, I've known that she was the best all my life.
My mom volunteers for the March of Dimes-mother marches and especially donates a lot of time to the Denver Museum of Natural History when it has special exhibits. These special exhibits required that she attend special classes (including tests and essays!) for several months before the exhibits even open.
My mom always bakes for the bake sales at her office and for her Women's Group (The Women's Spiritual Leadership Alliance-they raise money for a battered woman's shelter), and usually people ask, "What did Loretta bring? I'll buy that." She works twenty hours a week at an inner-city health clinic, attends the University of Denver as a special student, edits cookbooks, grows an organic garden, produces TV shows for the local community access channel, sews many of her own clothes (and some award-winning quilts), and patches my jeans. As if that weren't enough, she is passionate in her support of her worship group and volunteers to help put together all its statewide meetings. That sounds like a pretty busy schedule doesn't it? But you know, the most important thing my mom does is always be there for me.
