Tequila Punch in a Clay Bowl

Print this Recipe

(Cazuela)
Category: Party Punches with Alcohol
Makes 1 large serving
At the huge, lively square called Parian in Tlaquepaque, several restaurants and bars compete for customers by enticing passers-by to try certain specialties of the house. My husband, Bill, and I, and our friends, Donna and Don Luria from Tucson, Arizona, were delighted and amazed by a popular local punch simply called Cazuela. Individual clay bowls, called cazuelas (traditionally used to cook savory casseroles and other foods) are filled to brimming with chunks of citrus fruits, grapefruit soda, tequila, and ice cubes. Two fat jaunty straws are poked into the punch for drinking. This typical refreshing drink is very popular and lots of fun!
For each serving--which two can share--you'll need a 2-cup capacity shallow ceramic or glass bowl, about 7 inches in diameter at the top, with sloping sides. (Some individual pasta bowls are about the right size for this drink.)

2 ounces silver or gold tequila
   6 ounces grapefruit soda pop
1 small lime, quartered with skin
1/2 small unpeeled orange, cut into 1-inch chunks
1/4 small unpeeled grapefruit, cut into 1-inch chunks
   Ice cubes

Pour the tequila and grapefruit soda into the bowl. Add the pieces of citrus fruits. Let steep about 10 minutes. Add the amount of ice cubes needed to fill the bowl. Add 2 straws. Serve cold.
