1 cup hot water
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
1 cup flour
3/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup milk
2 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted and cooled
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup nuts chopped
Whipped cream or ice cream
In a small saucepan stir together water, sugars and cocoa. Simmer for 10 minutes; set aside.
Preheat oven to 350° F. Grease an 8 x 8 x 2-inch baking pan. Into a large mixer bowl, sift together flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder and salt. Add milk, butter or margarine and vanilla. Beat well. Stir in nuts and pour into baking pan. Pour reserved sauce over batter. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes or until top crust has pulled away from sides of pan. Cool in pan on a wire rack. Cut into 2-inch squares.
