_ cup butter or stick margarine, softened
_ cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
_ large egg yolk
_ cups all-purpose flour
___ teaspoon salt
___ cup milk chocolate chips or 3 bars (1.55 ounces each) milk chocolate, broken into small pieces
___ cup chopped nuts
1. Heat oven to 350°.
2. Mix butter, brown sugar, vanilla and egg yolk in large bowl. Stir in flour and salt. Press dough in ungreased rectangular pan, 13 X 9 X 2 inches.
3. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until very light brown (crust will be soft). Immediately sprinkle chocolate chips on hot crust. Let stand about 5 minutes or until soft; spread evenly. Sprinkle with nuts. Cool 30 minutes in pan on wire rack. For bars, cut into 8 rows by 4 rows while warm for easiest cutting.
*Do not use vegetable oil spreads.
**If using self-rising flour, omit salt.
