The bond between grandparents and grandchildren is a special on--of teaching, of sharing, of growing and of hope. Grandparents touch their grandchildrens hearts and influence their lives through many channels--stories, photos, proverbs, traditions and food--by passing on their wisdom to the young.
Wayne Hu perfects his recipes for his grandchildren. "My grandson loves Chinese food. My daughter doesn't live far from me, and once or twice a week they come over to eat with us. He walks in, and he smells Chinese Black Bean sauce, which is very fragrant. 'Boy, ' he says, 'that smells good! Papa, are you making Black Bean sauce? My pepper-tomato steak with black bean sauce has become his top choice." One of Wayne's little granddaughters likes to stand on a chair beside him. "Somtimes I let her drop the Chinese noodles in the water, but I have to watch her carefully so she doesn't get too close to the stove. She also loves to wash the rice in water," following an ancient Chinese method. Today, everyone in Wayne's family clamors for his Bake-Off® winning Chinese Roast Pork Buns, which are traditional Asian version of hot sandwich.
Wayne worked hard to be able to enjoy the delights of grandfatherhood. He fled China on the last boat out of Shanghai before World War II consumed the Pacific, and he made his way to Michigan, where he attended the University of Michigan, pursuing graduate studies in engineering, and then established himself as structural engineer. Wayne taught himself to cook, starting in college, when he realized "if you want good Chinese food, you have to learn how to cook it. I am proud to say I have perfected my Peking Duck."
