Most families have special dishes for special occasions. "Christmas Eve wouldn't be complete without meatballs in wine sauce and Shrimp DeJonge after midnight mass, and every July Fourth we drag out the crank freezer and make homemade ice cream," says Phelles Friedenauer.
But nonholidays are important, too. "I knew very little about cooking when I got married," says Phelles, "but I soon learned how important it is to put good food on the table." Too often everyday dinners don't get the applause they should. Kids are tired, adults are frazzled, even pets seem impatient, clamoring for the attention they missed all day. However, a rich, chocolatey dessert like Phelles's Chocolate Caramel Satin Pie always gets a big hand.
