Everyone knows that cooks are handy-but some are downright creative in finding the perfect kitchen utensil for every task.
* A teenage contestant from Texas brought a hammer from home, and, to the amazement of all, shattered mints on her range top with mighty smacks. (Good thing her neighbors weren't baking souffles!)
* In 1980, a man submitted a bread recipe-but he wasn't content with a mixer, blender, food processor or wooden spoon. He specified that a drill with a 3/8-inch bit should be used to mix the bread.
* One exacting finalist removed a lucky charm, a carpenter's level, from her apron pocket-and carefully sighted her cake along it before consigning it to the oven.
