This was one of my Mother's favorite recipes.
1 yeast cake
1/4 cup lukewarm water
1 cup milk
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup shortening
1 teaspoon salt
Flour
2 eggs beaten
1 teaspoon grated lemon zest
Soften yeast cake with water. Scald milk, then cool to lukewarm. Add sugar, shortening, and salt. Add flour to make a thick batter. Add eggs and lemon zest. Add enough more flour to make a soft dough. Knead; let rise until doubled. Punch down; let rise; punch down. Let rest 10 minutes; then shape into desired rolls. Let rise and bake at 350°F until light brown.
