Great Northern Bean Stew

This richly flavored sausage and vegetable stew is just the thing to warm you up on a chilly evening. Using canned beans, it's ready to serve in under 30 minutes.


   1 pound bulk pork sausage
   1 cup coarsely chopped onions
   1 cup thinly sliced carrots
   2 cups chopped cabbage
   1 tablespoon brown sugar
   1 (28-ounce) can whole tomatoes, undrained, cut up
   1 (15 1/2-ounce) can great northern beans, drained
   1/2 teaspoon paprika
   1/2 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
   1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon salt
   1/2 teaspoon pepper
   1 teaspoon vinegar
   1/4 teaspoon hot pepper sauce
   1/3 cup chopped fresh parsley or 1 tablespoon dried parsley flakes


In large saucepan or 4-quart Dutch oven, brown sausage and onions; drain. Stir in all remaining ingredients; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer 15 minutes.
