Ever since she received her first "easy bake" oven for her fifth birthday, Sandy has been leafing through the batter-speckled pages of her mother's 1950 edition of Betty Crocker's Cook Book. It is nestled safely between the Betty Crocker cookbook her mother gave her for Christmas when she was twelve and the more modern, loose-leaf copy that I gave her a few years ago. Sandy cooks every chance that she gets, frequently creating her own recipes. The fact that she is a career women and the primary provider for our family doesn't deter her from cooking dinner every night.
Sandy's interest in food and nutrition led her into a career as a registered dietitian, but another influence drove her to want to get her master's degree in public health. Since Sandy was old enough to walk, she has been taking care of her younger brother, Jeff, who has Down's syndrome. Sandy worked with the developmentally disabled, supervising Jeff and his schoolmates at summer programs and camps, and as a volunteer for the special Olympics.
Sandy is also a loving wife and mother. We have been married for ten wonderful years, and in October 1994, Sandy gave birth to our first child, Maggie. We live in Alaska. Virtually everyone is separated from family by several thousand miles. As a result, surrogate families develop fostered by this shared isolation. Sandy has done a great deal to forge these bonds of friendship and support.
Sandy was three months pregnant when we started building a cabin on a lake and well into her last trimester when we finished, but she was actively involved with the whole project. But Sandy has a myriad of her own hobbies as well as being a heck of a carpenter. She does beadwork, which she learned from Native Alaskan Indians, she paints, does cross-stitch, and most recently has taken up spinning wool to make yarn for her knitting.
Sandy is a wonderful person, terrific wife, adoring mother, excellent bread winner, and faithful friend. Through her work and with her free time, she serves her community. An avid and superb cook she epitomizes the qualities of Betty Crocker.
