Meat pies are popular fare in the Caribbean islands. Enjoying Jamaican meat pies at home is easy when you use refrigerated crescent rolls and start with purchased salsa to make the fruit salsa.

   MEAT PIES
   1 pound lean ground beef
   1/2 cup chopped onions
   1 jalapeno chiles, minced
   2 cloves garlic, minced
   4 teaspoons curry powder
   1/2 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
   1/2 teaspoon turmeric
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/8 teaspoon ground red pepper (cayenne)
   Salt to taste
1/4 cup unseasoned dry bread crumbs
   1/4 cup water
2 (8-ounce) cans refrigerated crescent rolls

   SALSA
   1 cup chunky-style salsa
1 (15 1/4-ounce) can tropical mixed fruits, coarsely chopped, drained and reserving 1 tablespoon liquid
   1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Heat oven to 375°F. In large skillet, combine ground beef, onion, chile and garlic; cook over medium-high heat until beef is thoroughly cooked, stirring frequently. Drain. Add curry powder, thyme, turmeric, pepper, ground red pepper and salt; mix well. Add bread crumbs and water; stir until thickened.

Separate dough into 8 rectangles; firmly press perforations to seal. Place 2 heaping tablespoons meat mixture on long half of each rectangle. Fold dough over filling; press edges to seal. Place on ungreased cookie sheet.

Bake at 375°F. for 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown. Meanwhile, in medium bowl, combine all salsa ingredients; mix well. Serve with meat pies.
