Fruit salads are popular all year round in Italy, but come summertime, the Florentines like to top theirs with a scoop of gelato. As the ice cream melts, it blends with the fruit juices, giving the dessert its name. A tablespoon or two of orange or apricot brandy is a nice addition. This is a great way to get non-fruit eaters to enjoy fruit.
1 pint Lemon Ice Cream, Orange Spumone (see Fruit, Ice Cream, and Spoon Desserts), or vanilla ice cream, softened
1 ripe peaches, cut into bite-size pieces
1 large banana, sliced
1 cup sliced strawberries
2 kiwifruit, peeled and sliced
1/4 cup fresh orange juice or apple juice
2 tablespoons sugar (optional)
1 Prepare the gelato or spumone, if necessary. Then, in a large bowl, toss together the fruits, juice, and sugar, if using any.
2 Spoon the fruit salad into serving dishes. Top with scoops of gelato, spumone, or ice cream. Serve immediately.
