Ingredients

1/2 cup shortening
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
about 3/4 cup buttermilk

Directions:

1. Heat oven to 450°.
2. Cut shortening into remaining ingredients except buttermilk in large bowl, using pastry blender or crisscrossing 2 knives, until mixture resembles fine crumbs. Stir in just enough buttermilk so dough leaves side of bowl and forms a ball.
3. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface. Knead lightly 10 times. Roll or pat 1/2 inch thick. Cut with floured 2 1/2-inch biscuit cutter. Place about 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet.
4. Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown. Immediately remove from cookie sheet. Serve hot.
