I grew up in a "German Mennonite family," relates Iona Redemer of Calumet, Oklahoma. "It was customary to invite friends or relatives to our home for Sunday dinner.
"Those Sundays were special occasions, so the guests were served this memorable meal. It's one I learned to love when I was growing up.
"When I pull out these recipes today, vivid memories come flooding back to me--fond memories of my grandmother and mother, who handed them down through our family.
"Maybe this meal is so dear to my heart because I helped Mother prepare parts of it. We began by baking zwieback (a delicious bread) on Saturday. I can still smell the mouth-watering aroma that filled Mother's kitchen...what a wonderful way to anticipate a house full of guests the next day!
"The rest of the menu included hearty German meatballs, glazed carrots and apple cake. It's my 'Most Memorable Meal'."
