"Summer has always been my favorite season, since I grew up on a small farm," says Shirley, who now lives in Lapeer, Michigan. "Hard work meant hearty appetites...and there was always lots of farm-fresh food to satisfy them! "We had a cow to provide rich, creamy dairy products. And I vividly recall the fresh berries, sweet corn and little red potatoes that made such wonderful summer meals." The highlight of each summer week was Sunday supper after church, she recalls. "That was our big meal of the day. Fried chicken was the traditional main course, and all the vegetables were fresh from our garden." Shirley loved this family feast so much that she frequently prepares it today. In addition to these four dishes, she serves corn on the cob and hot biscuits, both topped with her home-churned butter.
