Soak the beans overnight in water. In the morning, parboil the beans in the water for 10 minutes and strain. Reserve the water.
Put the oil and onion in a bean pot and add the beans. Mix the remaining ingredients with 1 cup of reserved water, pour over the beans and bake for six hours at 300 degrees. Continue to add water as needed to keep the beans from drying out.
