No-Frost Chocolate Chip Cake

Serves: 16

   1 cup dates chopped
   1 cup hot water
   1 cup butter or margarine
   1 cup sugar
   2 eggs
   1/2 teaspoon salt
   1 tablespoon vanilla extract
   1 3/4 cups flour
   1 teaspoon baking soda
   1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa
   1 cup chocolate chips
   1/2 cup nuts chopped


Heat oven to 350° F. In a small bowl, cover dates with hot water and set aside. Cream butter or margarine, sugar, eggs, salt, and vanilla together. Blend in flour, baking soda, cocoa, and 1/2 cup chocolate chips. Mix well. Add dates and water; mix well. Pour into a greased 9 x 13-inch baking pan. Sprinkle top of cake batter with remaining 1/2 cup chocolate chips and nuts. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until cake tests done.
