Make Your Own Tortillas!

By Sydney Hill

What I love about tortillas are the possibilities for anything. They go with sweet, they go with savory, they go with cheese, they go with peas. What a lovely invention! So, since they are so wonderful, lets go all out today and make not only noodles, but tortillas from scratch! Homemade tortillas beat store-bought by a long shot. Try them and see if you agree.

The best part is that the desserts to die for column uses these this week. Double whammy! Trying two new recipes in one making. That'll feel successful.

Homemade Tortillas

Yield: 20-24 tortillas

Serving size: 20
Calories per serving: 126

Ingredients:
4 cups flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 tablespoon salt
1 cup warm water
1/3 cup milk
1/2 cup shortening

Directions:
Mix dry ingredients in a bowl. Set aside. In a saucepan, mix milk and water, heat to just below boiling. Add milk/ water mixture and shortening to flour mixture and knead to a soft dough. Break into 20-24 balls. Let rest 10 minutes or more. Slightly flatten each ball with the palm of your hands. Roll out with almost no flour on the board, but with flour on the roller. If you have a tortilla press, you can use that. Cook to desired doneness.
