Cornbread Spanish-Style

Ingredients

1 cup cornmeal
1/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup sifted flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 egg
1 cup milk
1/4 cup shortening
1 (16-ounce) can cream-style corn
1 cup cottage cheese
------------------------------
Filling:
1 1/2 cups grated longhorn or Cheddar cheese
1 (4-ounce) can green chiles, chopped

Directions:

Combine dry ingredients; add egg, milk, shortening, corn, and cottage cheese. Stir lightly. Pour half of batter in greased 9-inch square pan. Sprinkle with half the Filling. Add remaining batter; top with remaining Filling. Bake at 400° for 45 minutes.

Filling:
Mix both ingredients.
