Ingredients

1 cup brown sugar
1 stick butter
2 tablespoons light corn syrup
3 - 4 large tart apples such as Granny Smith, peeled and sliced
1 loaf French bread
3 eggs
1 1/2 cups milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
------------------------------
Apple Syrup:
1 cup applesauce
1 (10-ounce) jar apple jelly
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
dash of salt

Directions:

Cook sugar, butter, and corn syrup at low temperature until thick. Pour into a 9x13x2-inch baking dish sprayed with nonstick cooking spray, or buttered well. Place apple slices on top. Cut bread in 1/4-inch slices and place on top of apples, pressing bread together tightly. Whisk together remaining ingredients and pour over bread; cover and refrigerate overnight. Bake uncovered 40 minutes in 350° oven. Serve hot with Apple Syrup.

Apple Syrup:
Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until apple jelly melts and is consistency of syrup.

Note: The French toast can be prepared ahead, and freezes well.

Fun Fact: On May 21, 1921, Taggart Baking Company of Indianapolis, Indiana, debuted its Wonder Bread. This bread was named by the vice president, Elmer Cline, who was filled with “wonder” by the scene of hundreds of balloons at the International Balloon Race.
