Ingredients

5 tablespoons butter
2 whole baking apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
2 tablespoons corn syrup
1 teaspoon cinnamon
9 pieces French bread, sliced 1 inch thick
3 large eggs
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:

Day before serving: in skillet, melt butter at medium heat. Add apple slices and cook until tender. Add brown sugar, corn syrup, and cinnamon. Cook, stirring until brown sugar dissolves. Pour into greased 9x13-inch pan and spread evenly. Arrange bread in one layer on top of apples. Mix eggs, milk, and vanilla. Pour over bread. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

Bake at 375° for 30–35 minutes. Mixture should be firm and bread golden. Cool in pan for 5 minutes. Invert a tray over French toast and carefully turn both over to unmold so apple layer is on top. Spoon any remaining sauce and/or apples over French toast. Serve immediately topped with sweetened whipped cream.
