Peas weren't accepted as a useful food until a 1555 famine in England forced peasants to gather and eat wild peas to prevent starvation. Even then, green peas did not gain popularity until the late 1600s. Then, French diners started getting impatient for mealtimes. Why? Because they wanted to eat green peas. Eating the desired peas to their heart's content at King Louis XIV's table, they would then return to their rooms to find another bowl of peas waiting for them. The bedroom peas would be eaten just before bedtime. Do you like peas that much?
