Cabbage Au Gratin

2 tablespoons butter or margarine
2 tablespoons flour
1 cup milk
4 cups cabbage coarsely shredded
Salt and pepper
1/2 cup sharp cheddar cheese shredded (2 oz.)


Preheat oven to 375° F. Grease a 1 1/2 -quart baking dish. In a medium saucepan melt butter or margarine stir in flour. Cook and stir over medium heat for 1 to 2 minutes. Add milk. Stirring over medium heat, bring to a boil and boil until thick and smooth.

In a saucepan boil cabbage in lightly salted water until barely tender, 5 to 8 minutes. Drain well. Stir cabbage into sauce. Add salt and pepper to taste. Pour into baking dish sprinkle with cheese. Bake, uncovered, for 20 minutes or until hot and bubbly.
