Dr. Ghosh: Loss of appetite during cancer treatment is due to many factors that include your type of treatment or level of stress. Treat appetite loss by managing your symptoms (pain, nausea or diarrhea) and discussing anything that's bothering you with your doctor, nurse, dietitian, member of the clergy, trusted friend or family member or mental health professional. Also, keep track of the foods, people, things or places that stimulate your appetite.
Your doctor can prescribe medications that can improve appetite, but try these suggestions to overcome lack of hunger first:
Eat small, frequent meals.
Choose foods high in protein and calories, such as shakes, custards and nutritional beverages (Boost® or Carnation® Instant Breakfast®).
If you crave a particular food, eat it.
Eat whenever you're hungry, no matter what time of day.
Drink plenty of liquids; eight to ten glasses daily are recommended.
Make meals and your eating environment attractive by playing soft music and dimming the lights.
Keep easy snacks on hand to enjoy often, even at bedtime. It's important to eat whenever you feel up to it. Good choices are cheese and crackers, pudding, yogurt, fruit, raisins, muffins and other breads, cereal, nuts and popcorn.
