Dr. Ghosh: Heartburn can be a complication of radiation therapy, surgery, chemotherapy and excessive stress. Heartburn causes symptoms of nausea, vomiting, pain, loss of appetite, bloating, acid reflux and belching. Your doctor can prescribe antibiotics, antacids and medications that may lessen your symptoms.
You can try consuming milk, yogurt or rice for some relief, or follow the list of suggestions below:
Avoid large meals, and refrain from lying down after meals.
Avoid eating within three hours of retiring.
No cigarette smoking or alcoholic beverages.
No spices, especially black and red peppers.
No citrus fruits, juices or soft drinks.
Avoid peppermint, chocolate and high-fat foods (fried or greasy items).
