Sliced Cucumber Pickles

1 1/2 teaspoons ground turmeric
20 medium cucumbers, sliced
12 onions, sliced
5 cups cider vinegar
4 cups sugar
1 teaspoon celery seeds
4 cinnamon sticks, 1 inch each
1 tablespoon mustard seeds
6 whole cloves
4 tablespoons salt
1 teaspoon peppercorn


Sprinkle sliced cucumbers and onions with salt and let stand at room temperature 1-1/2 hours. Drain well. Combine remaining ingredients in a large saucepan and bring to a boil. Add cucumbers and onions, reduce heat, and simmer 10 minutes. Remove cinnamon sticks. Ladle into hot sterilized jars and seal immediately.
