Chive and Chervil Dumplings

2 tablespoons chopped chives
2 tablespoons chopped chervil
1 1/2 cups sifted flour
2 teaspoons double-acting baking powder
3/4 cup milk
3 teaspoons shortening
1 teaspoon salt
freshly ground black pepper


Sift flour, baking powder, salt and pepper together. Cut in shortening with a pastry blender or two knives until the dough resembles coarse meal. Stir in chives and chervil. Add the milk, stirring only enough to blend. Drop by tablespoonfuls onto boiling beef or chicken stew. Cover and cook for 15 minutes.
