Hamburger-Potato Bake

2 pounds ground beef chuck
2 eggs, beaten
2 cups bread crumbs
2 tablespoons ketchup
4 teaspoons salt
4 teaspoons pepper
8 medium potatoes
1 (16-ounce) carton sour cream
1 stick butter or margarine, softened
3 ounces cream cheese, softened
garlic salt to taste
salt and pepper to taste
8 ounces grated sharp cheddar cheese


Combine meat, eggs, bread crumbs, ketchup, salt and pepper. Mix well, adding more crumbs if needed to make mixture firm. Put in an ungreased oblong glass baking dish and bake at 350° for 20–30 minutes or until brown.

Cook potatoes until done. Mash, adding sour cream, butter, cream cheese, garlic salt, salt and pepper. Whip. Spread over meat mixture. Sprinkle with Cheddar cheese. Return to oven and bake until cheese melts and is slightly browned.
