Yield: 4 - 5 dozen

1/3 cup butter or margarine, softened
1 (3-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
3/4 cup sugar
1 egg yolk
2 teaspoons almond extract
2 teaspoons orange juice
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 (14-ounce) container flaked coconut
1 (9-ounce) package chocolate kisses candies, wrappers removed

One hour before baking, in a large mixing bowl, cream together butter, cream cheese, and sugar until fluffy. Add egg yolk, almond extract, and orange juice, and beat well.

In another bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt; add gradually to creamed mixture. Stir in all but 3/4 cup coconut. Set remainder aside. Cover and chill dough 1 hour, or until it can be handled easily.

Preheat oven to 350°. Shape dough into balls 1 inch in diameter, then roll in remaining coconut. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 10–12 minutes, or until lightly browned (watch to make sure coconut doesn’t burn). Remove from oven; before cookies begin to cool, press an unwrapped chocolate kiss on top of each. Cool 1 minute, then remove to a wire rack to finish cooling.

Fun Fact: Thomasville, North Carolina, appropriately dubbed "Chair City," named its most conspicuous landmark, a thirty-foot replica of a Duncan Phyfe armchair, as its first official local historic landmark. The chair is located in the heart of downtown Thomasville, and is symbolic of the furniture industry’s presence in the area.
