Jelly Topped Almond Bites

Ingredients

2 sticks butter, softened
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon almond extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1 cup quick-cooking or old-fashioned oatmeal, uncooked
1 (8-ounce) jar cherry jelly (or other tart red jelly, such as currant)
1 package chopped almonds

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375°. Beat butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add egg and almond extract and beat until blended. Sift together flour, soda, salt, and nutmeg. Gradually add to creamed mixture and beat well. Stir in oatmeal. Shape dough into 1 1/4-inch balls. Place on ungreased cookie sheets and make a hollow in each ball. Bake for about 12 minutes. Cool on racks. Then place a small amount of jelly in each hollow and sprinkle with chopped almonds.

Note: Any flavor jam or jelly you prefer can be used instead of cherry.
