Sunny Cheese Strata

Ingredients

8 slices French bread 1/2 -inch thick day-old or Italian bread
2 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened
1 tablespoon dried minced onion
1 cup ham cubed cooked
6 ounces sharp cheddar cheese shredded (about 1 1/2 cups)
4 eggs large
1 3/4 cups milk
2 tablespoons Dijon style mustard
1 tablespoon flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
Paprika

Directions:

Heat oven to 325°. Grease a shallow 1 1/2 - or 2-quart baking dish. Spread bread with butter. Trim crusts off if desired. Cut bread into cubes (about 4 cups). Place half of the cubes in baking dish. Sprinkle with half of the onion, half of the ham, and half of the cheese. Repeat layers.

Beat eggs in a medium bowl. Stir in milk. Dijon mustard, flour, salt, and pepper until smooth. Pour over top of bread mixture, pressing bread under liquid to moisten. Sprinkle with paprika.

Bake 45 minutes until top is puffed and a knife inserted near center comes out clean.
