Toffee Butter Bars

1 cup butter, softened
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups self-rising flour
1 1/2-2 (7-ounce) package Hershey Special Dark chocolate bar, broken into squares
1/2 cup (or more) finely chopped walnuts or pecans


Preheat oven to 350°. Grease a 9x13-inch baking pan. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla. Gradually add flour, mixing well. Spread mixture in prepared pan. Bake for 20 minutes (cookie bottom may not appear done, but is fully baked). Place chocolate squares on top of cookie bottom immediately after removing from oven. When chocolate is melted, spread evenly with spatula. Sprinkle on nuts. Immediately cut into bars.
