Best-Ever Thumb Print Cookies

Ingredients

1 cup butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 egg yolk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 egg whites, slightly beaten
1 finely chopped nutmeg
Butter Cream Frosting
1 Crabapple jelly or maraschino cherry

Butter Cream Frosting:
1/3 cup butter
3 cups powdered sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 tablespoons milk

Directions:

Cream butter and brown sugar. Add yolks and vanilla, mix well. Stir in flour and salt. Roll into 1-inch balls. Dip each ball into egg whites then roll in chopped nuts. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 5 minutes at 375°. Make thumb print in center of each cookie. Bake 8 minutes longer. At Christmas, these are pretty filled with green Butter Cream Frosting and topped with a spoonful of crabapple jelly or a maraschino cherry.

Butter Cream Frosting:
Cream butter and sugar, stir in vanilla and add enough milk to make frosting smooth and spreading consistency.
